Caliber Cost Segregation

Our credentials

Who prepares and signs your study, and what stands behind them.

Caliber Cost Segregation is a member of the National Board of Cost Segregation Specialist (NBCSS), a professional membership organization for cost segregation practice. Every Caliber Cost Segregation Professional holds the Certified Cost Segregation Specialist (CCSS) credential and personally signs the studies they prepare.

What the CCSS credential requires

The board publishes its standards in full. Membership is admission to the organization; certification is a separate, assessed decision, and the CCSS is earned through four parts:

  1. 1

    Knowledge examination

A timed 180-minute knowledge examination with a published passing standard.

  2. 2

    Practical case exercise

A 6–8 hour case where every deterministic check must pass and each rubric criterion must score at least 3 of 4.

  3. 3

    Oral defense

A 30-minute defense of the work before two examiners.

  4. 4

    Human decision

A human decision-maker reviews the whole file. Automated scoring assists but never adjudicates.

Credential holders complete 12 hours of professional development in each 12-month cycle, credentials are publicly verifiable, and a scope-and-ethics acknowledgement is required before eligibility.

Why it matters for your study

The IRS Cost Segregation Audit Techniques Guide lists “Preparation by an Individual with Expertise and Experience” as the first element of a quality study: knowledge of the construction process, experience in cost estimating and allocation, and command of the tax law that governs property classification.

  • A named professional prepares, reviews and signs your study, and is your Audit-Defense Lead of record.
  • The study is built to the 13 principal elements of the IRS Cost Segregation Audit Techniques Guide (Pub. 5653).
  • Every classification carries an authority citation; every quantity records the evidence behind it.
  • The Caliber Engine does the extraction. A credentialed professional makes the calls and stands behind them.

Verify it yourself

Don’t take our word for it. Look us up.

The board keeps a public directory of professional members and lists cost segregation specialists by state. CPAs and tax strategists can find the board’s verified partner program there too.
